From Struggling with Change to Thriving in a Brand New School
/Story of Hope for Jaivyn
Challenge: Emotional Regulation, Anger, Autism, Picky Eating
Jaivyn, or as he prefers to be called Jaivyn Godzilla, came to our office at 9 years old. On his intake paperwork, his mom rated his ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) as a 10/10. However, things didn’t just suddenly begin to pop up at the age of 9.
At birth, he was a colicky baby with a lot of reflux. When he was 15 months old, he started with speech therapy due to speech delays. After 3 years of therapy, he was hitting goals but his speech was still very delayed. When he began school, it became evident that he not only had difficulties communicating but also paying attention and following directions. He then received his ADHD diagnosis and began a regimen of medication and therapy, but he was still struggling. Mom let us know that his medication seemed to only work for half of a day before it stopped working.
After a full day of school, Jaivyn would melt down for at least 45 mins - 1 hour. He did not handle change well and did not like talking. Mom felt he was completely unable to express his emotions outside of intense anger. All of this caused his mom intense anxiety and she felt as if she was carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders. On his first appointment, Jaivyn told us that when he got mad/frustrated he would “see red” and it would take over his brain.
When they came to Crossroads Chiropractic, mom was skeptical. So many different therapies and treatments promised results but they just hadn’t seen any.
Since starting at Crossroads Chiropractic, Jaivyn has seen incredible changes. Prior to chiropractic, Jaivyn was a very picky eater due to sensory overload however, now he can enjoy most foods. His mom was overjoyed to share with us that previously he could not stand the smell of eggs. But now, he actually went an entire week eating eggs every single morning! His picky eating also caused him to be very low in weight and his doctors had him on medication to increase his appetite. Now with his natural desire to eat a wider variety of foods, he has been able to reach a more healthy weight, and his doctors have been able to decrease his appetite stimulant medication!!
Jaivyn’s meltdowns have dramatically decreased as well. There are now weeks where Jaivyn does not have a meltdown at all or rarely as compared to daily.
Jaivyn has also started communicating to his mom. In her own words, he is now communicating, “like a champion.” He can now articulate to his mom what he is feeling and can tell when he is getting unregulated. Jaivyn looks forward to his adjustments every week and his mom told us that, “I finally have a reasonable child.”
One of the biggest fears his mom had was that fact that Jaivyn needed to change schools this year. A new school year with the added stress of it being a brand new school would be a lot of change and it caused mom to have a lot of anxiety. Jaivyn is currently a few months into his new school year and mom reported that it is going really well! Jaivyn’s mom told us, “I’m specifically proud because he previously struggled with change and being in a new school is a big change. His first few weeks of school have been incredible! My 9 year old is so smart but always struggled so much that learning was impeded. Now everyone talks about his growth and vocabulary.” Jaivyn’s mom is finally able to experience the child she knew she had all along. We cannot wait to see what goals he will reach in the future!
